Who doesn’t want to fly right? With all the advantages, looking for an ultralight aircraft for sale may be a great experience or a terrible one depending on how you approach it. Knowing what you’re getting into ahead of time can, at a minimum, save you some hassle, and in the long run save you time money, heartache (and possibly bodily injury). So what is it about ultralights that seems so appealing. One of the more attractive things about them has to do with their almost non-existent barrier to entry. For instance, training can be completed in a couple of days, and in actuality, you don’t need a license to fly them at all. Training is highly recommended though. What’s more, most ultralights are small enough that you can fold them up and pack them wherever you want to go. Lastly, ultralights are easy to unfold and there’s bound to be people willing to help out. First things first, though: What is an ultralight aircraft? An ultralight is a single-seat aircraft the can carry no more than five gallons of gas. It must weight less than 254 pounds. Ultralights are not allowed to go faster than 55 knots. Ultralights have to stall out at 24 knots of airspeed or slower. You can’t fly at night or over a city or town, or anywhere with homes or businesses. Finally, you have a few styles of ultralights to choose from, including weight-shift control trikes, powered parachutes, and powered paragliding. A few things to look for when buying: -Needs to be a single seater, no exceptions. -Look for castle bolts and pins to keep nuts and bolts from coming loose. -Inspect for rust. Make sure the rudder pedal mechanism is well built. -Should not have any cables, or any other loose parts near the propeller. -It should be able to fly in a straight line without much effort. You shouldn’t have to keep constant pressure on the ailerons to keep it going in a straight line. -How tough is it? Does it how a lot of wear and tear from landings? -What kind of repairs have been done, and does it need constant maintenance? Has the aircraft ever crashed? -Do not purchase any type of rig that has structural integrity problems (cracks etc.) with the frame. -Try to inspect the craft in person. Verify that the aileron is as simply designed as possible to minimize problems.
